Business Development

The VisitScotland Challenge Fund - Round Three Deadline
The VisitScotland Challenge Fund is designed to assist collaborative group marketing projects that attract more visitors to Scotland and make it easier for them to book their visit. The Fund enables groups of tourism businesses to extend current marketing activity or test a new market or activity which could bring additional visitors, but is not designed to be long term or core funding for major initiatives. Applicants will need to be able to demonstrate what is new or different from previous activity.

A tourism business is defined as "a business who directly benefits from and whose activities or services directly encourage leisure and business visitors to and within Scotland". Check out scotexchange.net to see if your organisation can apply for a share of the £1m pot before the 31 October deadline.

Culture and Sport Statistics
The Scottish Executive is consulting until 4 October on how statistics on culture and sport could be published. The aim of the proposed Scottish Executive Culture and Sport Statistics Compendium Publication would be to provide users with a coherent picture of culture and sport in Scotland, by collating and publishing a compendium of statistics on these sectors. Subject to consultation, the publication is likely to include the following topics: attendance, participation, attitudes, excellence, volunteering, events, facilities, education, employment, economic benefits and financing. scotland.gov.uk

Something to Think About…

Check and double check
A survey by the Royal Mail has uncovered a worrying fact: poor spelling and grammar in business literature is costing companies billions of pounds in lost sales. Three-quarters of those surveyed said they had no trust in a company that could not spell, and one-quarter said they would not purchase products from companies that spelled their name incorrectly.

Dial-up is old hat...
Dial-up internet connections continue to fall, declining by 26.6% in the first six months of this year. During the same period, broadband connections grew by 73%, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Salary survey
The latest news from The Chartered Institute of Marketing shows that marketers in mid-level jobs are not as well paid as those at similar levels in other professions. They also have less chance of promotion within their company. The survey shows women are sometimes earning more than men.
